The Phoenix Girls 1: The Conjuring Glass

This is my first young adult cover, and will hopefully lead to many more. I have been wanting to break into that market, and this was an opportunity I could not pass up. Brian Knight's series is a definite possibility for mass market availability, and I hope to be a part of that explosion when it comes! This illustration was both a challenge and was particularly satisfying in that it was a goal achieved through no small amount of worry, work, and adversity. I quickly realized all my old tricks for horror imagery were off the table, so I pushed the elements of magic and mystery to the fullest. Special thanks go to a great friend, Nick, who took photos of his daughters, Shayna and McKenna, and to my wife, Carmen, who I photographed for reference of the girls' robes. Without those references, the painting would not be what it is. Thanks!
